Letter Aa, Math and Writing!

We had a full day today with all of our friends together for the first time! We started our morning by learning our first Letters Alive friend, Amos Alligator. We practiced the sound letter “Aa” makes and also practiced writing letter “Aa.” After that, we looked at what friends in our class have letter “Aa” in their name.

We listened to the story, The Kissing Hand, and talked about the different ways to read it. We came up with 1. Reading the words and 2. Reading the pictures! There is one more way that we can read a book, but we will learn about that tomorrow. Smile

This book reminded us that it’s okay to leave mom and dad to come to school. If we ever feel sad, we can put our hand to our cheek and remember that our moms and dads love us!

During math time today, we practiced what it looks like to do “Math by Yourself.” This is a choice the kids will be able to pick from later in the year, after lots of practice. Today we worked on playing quietly by ourselves with our teddy bears. We counted, sorted and put them into patterns!

Here we are being illustrators of our school book! What great coloring everyone did!

Today was our first day of Writer’s Workshop. I showed the kids how to think of something really special to us that we want to tell a story about. Then I drew the picture and told a story while I did it. We talked about how important it is to be quiet during this time so we can all work hard and focus on our ideas. Then it was their turn! Our room was silent for 15 minutes as these little guys told a story through their pictures. I was so impressed with what they did. Here are some examples:

We learned so much today!! I could not be happier with how well they listened and worked…can’t wait for another day tomorrow Smile

Hooray! Hooray! We Had a Great First Day! (Part 2)

We had another wonderful first day of Kindergarten! It was fun to meet the rest of our class and parents. We had the same schedule as yesterday, with a little more play time and work time. We practiced rolling worms to make the letters in our name!

Hooray! Hooray! We Had a Great First Day!

Our first day at school went so fast! We were very busy. After recess we put our paint shirts on and marched down the hall to Mr. Procter’s room. Here we are ready to go Smile

Ready for Art

During Art the kids learned where their spots were and watched Mr. Procter do a paint demonstration. Then they got to do their first art project: painting with rulers!

When we came back to the room we read the book, How Full is Your Bucket? and talked about what it means to “fill a bucket.” I will share their ideas and awesome pictures later this week Smile We had another recess, went to lunch, listened to a story and finally got play time!

Welcome to Kindergarten!

Welcome to our classroom blog! This is a place where you can find helpful information (snack calendar, lunch menu, class list, daily schedule, no school days, etc.), stay involved with what we are learning each day and read your own child’s blog post about what they enjoy in kindergarten!

I hope you will use this resource frequently and share it with your child. They will love to share with you what we are doing and explain what is going on in the pictures posted.

You should have received a letter in the mail stating which day you and your child will come to school. I will meet half of you on Monday and the other half on Tuesday.

Please stop by our classroom Thursday night, August 23 between 5-6 p.m. during our elementary open house. This will be a great opportunity for your child to explore the room and for me to meet them before our official first day! I am looking forward to it—the room is almost ready to go Smile

If you have any questions, please feel free to call or e-mail me.
