Spider Facts

We learned a lot this week about spiders! We read many books, had a naturalist speak, made our own books called The Very Busy Spider,  made our own spiders and webs and painted our hands to make a spider poster with spider facts. Whew! We were BUSY! There were so many fun things to do with spiders! The kids learned many cool spider facts and shared those facts in their writing.

The students each got to make their own spider, however they wanted! As long as it had two body parts, 8 legs and 6-9 eyes..the rest was up to them! After reading the book, Be Nice to Spiders, we followed Helen’s (the spider) step by step directions in making her web. We finished them off with a little glitter Smile

AB Patterns

We learned a lot about AB patterns this past week. The kids practiced making their own AB patterns with linking cubes, teddy bears and shapes.  On Friday we made AB patterns with people! We lined up in AB order according to gender and then according to shoes (shoelaces vs. no shoelaces).

After all of that practice, the kids made their own AB patterns with fun Halloween stickers.  Here are some examples!

We also made different patterns using shapes. The kids decorated their own spider web and glued the shapes on in a pattern.

Fall Fun!

Last week we voted on what kind of pumpkin face we wanted to carve in our class pumpkin. The choices were scary, silly or sad.  The winning face was….SCARY! Here is our graph:

Pumpkin Graph

Today we talked about the steps in carving a pumpkin. The students filled our their own first, next and last chart. First we cut out the top. Next we take out the seeds. Last we carve the face. The students chose the eyes, nose and mouth by looking at the face option on starfall.com. This is the finished product!

Are you scared??? Smile The kids loved watching me carve the pumpkin and drew their own version of the pumpkin on paper.

Last week we also talked a lot about the season of fall. We read lots of fun stories, used tissue paper to make maple and oak leaves change colors and drew and labeled a fall picture! Here are how the fall pictures turned out:

Itsy Bitsy Spider

This week we are learning all about Spiders! Today we voted on whether or not we liked Spiders. We had 11 yes votes and 6 no votes. At the end of the week, after we are all done learning about spiders, we will re-vote to see if we change our minds!

Do you like spiders

Today we made a KWL chart about what we already KNOW about spiders and what we WANT to know.  At the end of the week we will be able to fill in what we LEARNED. After that, we practiced singing the Itsy Bitsy Spider and made a house with a spout for the spider to crawl up and down. The spout is a pipe cleaner and we used plastic spiders. They turned out very cute. Here is an example.

More spider pictures to come! We have a lot of fun planned for this week!

Today was a cold, windy day but we enjoyed everything the pumpkin patch had to offer anyway! We went through the corn maze, mini golfed, played on the playgrounds, rode big tricycles and went on a hay ride to pick our pumpkins!

Ms. F and Fire Safety!

This week we are learning all about Ms. F and her funny feet! The kids made uppercase and lowercase F’s out of foam. They turned out great!

F picture

This week we are also talking about fire safety. We got to visit the fire station today and talk to firefighters. They taught us how to get out of a burning/smoky building safely. They also showed us the cool fire trucks they use. All of the kids got a chance to squirt water out of a hose like they were putting out a fire! We painted red EXIT signs today to help us remember where we can exit the building.

Sight Walk/High School Readers

Last week we went on a sight walk! All of the kids had a piece of paper that told them all of the things they needed to keep their eyes open for.  It was a beautiful day and they enjoyed getting outside and using one of their five senses (their eyes) to look for things in the neighborhood.

Here’s our line, ready to go!

Sight walk

When we got back from our sight walk we continued using our eyes by looking through magnifying glasses, kaleidoscopes and microscopes.

On Friday we had some high school visitors who came to read to us! It was so fun to hear what a good reader sounds like. The kids also got to show the high schoolers how they can read!
